Are the sessions suitable to my child with Special Educational Needs?

In short, YES!!
  • We are striving to make our Youth Circus as inclusive as possible. We wish all children and young people who want to participate to be able to do so (numbers are limited), and as such we invite everyone who participates to be open to inclusion as well.
  • All staff are experienced in working with children and young adults with diverse needs. Please note however, that currently we are not proficient in BSL.
  • All carers/support workers are invited to stay with children with SEN if it is in their best interest to do so.
  • We will be issuing Social Stories, picture-based explanations of the sessions, via email to all.
  • If there is anything else we can do to manage your child's experience better, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Do I need to complete a form?

Yes.
  • All participants will need to have a completed, signed, consent form with any personal disclosures about their access and learning needs explicitly stated so that we can best support them in their activities.

  • If there are any activities that your child should NOT engage with – for whatever reason – please let us know this too. It will not preclude them from participating in the other activities.

What should we bring and wear?

  • Children should wear easy-to-move in clothing such as gym/sports wear.
  • NO ZIPS, NO SEQUINS or METAL on any of the clothing as these can damage the equipment and also cause difficulties for the participants.
  • Gym clothing is ideal so long as it is not too baggy and covers their armpits, backs of knees and torsos.
  • All jewellery and watches will need to be removed (nose/ear studs are okay).
  • Please ensure all children have WATER with them. A light snack might be appropriate as well.

Background Information:

Tina Carter has set this project up out of a passion for circus, aerial and accessible activities. Having spent many years working with groups like Graeae Theatre Company, (she choreographed their summer WW1 centenary show, This is Not for You, this year, and their youth group, The Rollettes, last Christmas) when much of her work is away from Kent, she felt it was high time to start something up closer to home. Obviously if the activities we have on offer do not currently meet your desire/needs, then let’s have a conversation and see if we can’t offer something more suitable. I’m open to suggestions.

Weekly Schedule

Each session will include a variety of different skills and equipment such as Aerial (hoop, fabric, or trapeze), Stilts, Hula Hoop, and different juggling apparatus (spinning plates, diabolos, beanbags etc.).
